Steadfast

The ancient eavesdropper

The roots of the steadfast tree

grow silently downward,

feeling their way through

ages worth of decay.

Worms find wiggle room

in the smallest of earthen recesses,

noticing every footstep as their

roof quivers and compresses.

Forgotten caches of acorns

lie dormant in the dark,

one day awakened

by a tiny sliver of light

dissecting the thick duff.

Fossilized bones conceal

secrets of the flesh,

recasting past identity

under new death masks.

Mystery grows deeper as

shooting stars fade –

unrealized purpose

surfacing beneath the debris

of yesterday’s infamous ways.

Trees remain true to their origins

in the universe, where human-centered

things seem dislocated and senseless –

they stand regardless of what falls

out of focus.

  1. I like this one. Captures the feeling of an ancient tree.
