Degrees of shade

Birds chase clouds
like errant arrows
the sky fletched
with feathery cirrus.

A crow
stalks insects —
amid a field
of fading
dandelions —
white dwarfs &
black shadows.

No canopy the same
each leaf unique
degrees of shade.

He
was
higher
than
a
kite
stuck
in

tree —
no
stiff
wind
or
lofted
stone
could
shake
him
down.

The sun paces
across the sky —
restless trees
rustle their
canopies.

Only as strong
as my weakest link
windswept spider web.

All of Spring’s
resplendent colors
warmed by an
early Summer.

The
painterly
brushstrokes
of trees —
their
boughs
coloring
the sky —
outside
the lines.

As dawn breaks
the world wakes
I give thanks
for another day
alive on this
beautiful Earth.
