A crowd
of ferns angle
their fronds sunward
amid a chlorophyll
spent forest whose
remnant green shades
stand out against autumn’s
camouflage of red, yellow
& orange.
Leaves begin their
descent south with the
geese, finding solace
in migrant
flocks & canopies —
all life a marionette
of the seasons
spellbound by
an invisible ether.

Thank you kindly, my friend! I went out to the Shotpouch Cabin this Saturday and did some trail maintenance work and attended a creative writing seminar. While I was taking a break, I took this photo of the sun’s brilliant rays parting their own path through the trees. There is something so familiar and true about autumn – the musky scent of decaying leaves and elk tracks, warm mid-day breezes swishing through the understory, half-naked trees huddling together in the cold frost of early morning, the golden light briefly gilding a world caked in darkness. We come to appreciate these shortened moments of illumination more and more as the days fade into anonymity. I hope you had a wonderful weekend, my friend, and keep up the inspired work on your blog 🙂

Hi Tyler, what a beautiful description of the day. Makes me feel like I was right there on the trail enjoying it, too. Must have been a powerful seminar with some other really good writers to share the weekend. Just a wonderful photo. yes, Autumn invites appreciation and demands that we seize the moment. We see the shifting and changing before our eyes as the wind carries the leaves and brings the first real chill of the season. I hear it now in the trees outside my window, and hope that this wind is bringing us some rain.
It was a wonderful weekend, thank you, a family celebration. Quiet and spent mostly at home and in the garden. The only disappointment was our networks back here didn’t carry the Ducks game. We kept up with the score, but missed watching them play. We always love seeing what is happening around Eugene and hope for a glimpse of the landscape. No oblivion, Tyler, so long as you keep taking your photos and writing about them. Cheers! Elizabeth

Your photo looks like a scene from Jurassic Park;) and, of course, your words are lovely.
Thank you, Kim! I agree. Almost like you’d expect to see a Velociraptor step out from behind the ferns. They actually filmed parts of Jurassic Park II in Fern Canyon, California, which looks very similar to the Oregon Coast. I hope you’re having a relaxing weekend, my friend 🙂
