Out for a walk
in the garden this week
thinking I’d picked the last
of the summer veggies,
when I stumbled upon
two botanical whales
beached atop jute fabric,
I knew I was wrong –
my mind reeling like
Captain Ahab at the bow.
How could I miss these
two-foot giants
as long as the
five blind earthworms
that found them first?
On second thought,
what a blissful miss
at my own hands,
its flesh still intact
ripe for the taking.
And so, two
zeppelin-sized
zucchinis crashed
on my kitchen counter,
their green girth
gobbling up space –
entire worlds
grown under my nose,
picked by a mere mortal.
Already, I can justย
imagine the sweet smell
of dozens of loaves ย ย
baking in the oven,
this autumn harvest
my ambrosia.
It’s amazing how
plant life can be
powerfully
self-sufficient given
the simplest ingredients
of sun, soil & water.
H.G. Wells would be
proud of a super food
without repercussion.*
*If you’ve read H.G. Wells’ sci-fi book “Food of the Gods,” you might chuckle at the irony in the last line.
Been there, done that and wondered the same thing ….’How did I miss these?!’ Great poem. Made me chuckle. Have a great weekend.
Thank you, Wendy! I had a wonderful weekend, immersed in Nature with other creative spirits at a “Working & writing in the woods” workshop. I also found time to weed the front flower bed and eat fresh zucchini bread. The weather was simply gorgeous. Autumn leaves have set the ground ablaze with their festive colors and shapes. I hope you had a pleasant weekend as well!
Cheers,

Thx Tyler. Best season of the year.
…never turn your back on zucchinis.
Haha! After this experience, I will always remember to stay vigilant in the garden. Instead of the Great Pumpkin, we have the Great Zucchini, its distant cousin ๐
Cheers,
Tyler

Yes indeed, zucchini bread is delicious! We managed to make over 12 loaves in the oven with one of the giant specimens. I’ve been feasting the entire weekend on its ambrosia-laced goodness. I hope you had a wonderful weekend, my friend!
Cheers,
Tyler ๐
I have not read it, so I will take your word for it on the irony. I do know that my culinary skills and my creativity are often out-witted by the super powers of the zucchini.
Thank you, my friend! Haha! You are too funny ๐
Cheers,
Tyler
Reblogged this on The ancient eavesdropper.
Is it impertinent of me to say I have zucchini envy? ๐
I love your impertinence! Never lose your nerve for humor, my friend ๐
Cheers,
Tyler
