The gang green of summer has yellowed, colors drained, leaves amputated with autumn’s cold axe, skies bruised by blustery storm clouds, canopies banging boughs, conifer needles sticking it out, while naked deciduous trees read their wet, crumpled fortune cookies from above…

Ponderosa pine prickly profiles,
Douglas fir twin tower lineups,
Hemlock hunchbacked hoodlimbs,
Oregon ash switch-blade mugs,
Big leaf maple five-spiked mohawks,
Black cottonwood low-rider leaves,
a band of photosynthetic trunk thugs
atop grass knuckles, shooting the breeze.
