Queen Nefertiti or bust

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to visit the traveling King Tut Exhibit when it passed through the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Montana. As an art history nut, this was my blissful afterlife, seeing Egyptian artistry at its height. Of course, I wrote several Egyptian-inspired poems paired with my countless photos, images blurred by my trembling excitement. Here is one I did on the infamous Queen Nefertiti bust. Enjoy!

The ancient eavesdropper

Queen Nefertiti or bust

Queen Nefertiti
still commands
our attention all the way
back from 1370 -1330 BC,
painted stucco layers
over a limestone core,
attributed to the workshop
of sculptor Thutmose,
standing 19 inches tall
and scaling a slim 44 pounds,
her royal trapezoidal,
creamy copper, custard
and crimson-colored crown
with decapitated cobra
perched atop a bust of
flushed facade sporting
silky skin from forehead south
to sensual chin and serpentine neck,
broad collar bones bejeweled
by confetti floral facsimiles,
inset quartz iris only intact
on the left eye, ears nibbled by the
seductress of time,
famed regal Egyptian queendom
runner up to Cleopatra,
crazed artists and historians alike
copy her cosmetic complexion
to mask their own mortality
and make conjectures as to the
cause of her casualty.

I first encountered Queen Nefertiti when she first went on tour and visited Berlin during my German years (long ago now). I’m a big fan of all things ancient Egypt. In fact I worked in the Pergamon Museum for a time, famous for its stash of AE artefacts. You should have seen the massive basalt statues they had in their yards away from public view!
Great poem Tyler, I do enjoy my daily dose 😉

    • Thank you, Ishaiya! Very cool! I am a huge fan of Egyptian artwork as well (if you couldn’t already tell!). Hope you are having a wonderful day, my friend 🙂
      Cheers,
      Tyler

I have an affinity for Egyptian style eyes. The Eye of Wedjat is a symbol I’ve been drawn to over the years.

I hope your day is equally wonderful 🙂
