Immunity in jeopardy

Immunity in jeopardy

I wrote this poem purposely without hardly any punctuation to mimic the congealing, mucosal effects of a cold. While I am not sick today, I would like to dedicate this poetic prescription to Beverly Dyer who is recovering from a nasty virus. You can check out her blog at http://artprescription.com/, wish her well and view her inspiring paintings and haikus. Without further adieu I give you an ode to the same old cold and flu!

Have a cold
sick in bed
running nose
aching head
arthritic joints
no more tissues
just more sores
confined to soup
waking up a chore
agonizing cough
irritated throat
popping pills
purple serum
and herbal lozenges
immunity in jeopardy
icky company
dripping, draining,
drowsily delirious
hear no sound
ears all plugged
food not going down
robbed of taste
by this germ without a face
infesting society
a modern day Bubonic plague
without the death of course
not knowing up from down
all turned around
a whirling disease
crippling the senses
no cure in sight to weaken
the rhinoviruses might
so sad, a plight supposedly
self-contained by science
five vaccines
ten new strains
not our gain
why put up a fight?
Lie in bed, burn it out
sweat and sleep
swallow soup
have yourself
a sneezing snit
and tissue fit
until one fine day
that cold might cough
and blow away
hip, hip, hooray!

Surely I will be healed by this poetic prescription!! Such a “common” affliction, yet causes life to pause…reminding us we are humans. Thank you!! Your kind words have crossed through the ethers.

    • You are very welcome, Beverly! I do hope you are feeling better and am glad my short poem is helping to remedy your ailing muse. Thank you for re-blogging my post by the way ๐Ÿ™‚

Makes me remember why I hate having a cold.

Your poem captures the essence of upper respiratory infections. Well done. Thanks for stopping by my Europe blog and checking out the posts on the Dolomites.

    • Thank you, Rosemarie! Of course, I wrote this poem while I was sick, since poets are in-the-moment type of people! Your photographs and trip journaling are wonderful. Glad to see you are enjoying yourself. Hoping to get to get to Italy next year with my wife, so Europe is on the horizon ๐Ÿ™‚ Have a great weekend!
      Cheers,
