Train of heart

Please don’t think me daft

for forgetting home and its distance back.

I am in another place, spaced in time

from you, of course, but not too far by train of heart.

Here, we travel light and carry on, beat by beat, into the night.

Within us we are omnipresent, we can cross the bridge

that the years have collapsed and mend it with a scaffolding

whose tender bonds remain as strong as railroad ties forged in love’s furnace.

X’s and O’s cross infinitely by word of mouth,

letters sent postage paid to mail boxes on worn routes,

smiles piling high as snow which drifts like steam from coffee mugs.

Nothing changes but the season’s faces, four travelers lost in a trance

of crowded glances waiting to step on at a moment’s platform

and embrace the passing engine as it rumbles on through them.

This is where home is forever born.
